Horror 101 Episode 7: Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)
This episode Fred, Jam, and special guest Me10dy sit down and enjoy a post-Christmas horror movie about Christmas. It’s worth a watch with this twisted tale from Finland (that’s currently free to Shudder subscribers).
Horror 101 Episode 6: Alien (1979)
By listener request (but also because they love the film themselves) Fred and Jam delve deep into the Nostromo to cover Ridley Scott’s Alien from 1979. Plenty of discussion about what separates the film from others in the franchise, why it’s considered a horror movie, and a slew of information from behind the scenes.
Horror 101 Episode 5: Thankskilling (2009)
This week Fred and Jam forego knowledge, class, and anything else to watch the trashy horror film Thankskilling. If you’ve never seen it, you should. If you’re feeling lucky, go ahead and give this approx hour long episode a listen as Fred filtered in plenty of the movie’s dialogue. It’s a blast, but one you should probably watch along with the film.
Horror 101 Episode 4: Halloween II (1981)
As is often the case with horror movies, there are sequential movies that are all related to one another and we think it’s best to keep them together. In the case of Halloween, the sequel is so connected that it literally begins where the first movie ends. Jam and Fred discuss the sordid tale of why this film does not quite live up to the original, but why it is worthwhile nonetheless. Horror 101 Episode 3: Halloween (1978)
For this very special day Jam and Fred have a very special episode of Horror 101 featuring the original Halloween from 1978 and directed by John Carpenter. Our final format has been decided as a commentary to the movie itself, though you definitely don’t have to be watching it to enjoy this episode. If you do wish to watch as a running commentary, queue up your version to the very beginning and put it on pause, we’ll tell you when to start.
Horror 101 Episode 2: The Evil Dead (1982)
For our second episode Jam and Fred dive deep into the woods with Sam Raimi’s 1982 horror cult classic The Evil Dead. Whether it was edited, banned, or hated upon, this is one of the earliest instances of a movie too gory and brutal for many audiences. The original “cabin in the woods” tale about 5 friends who awaken evil spirits and are unable to leave is horror at its best. Listen to the two discuss the film, and its finer points, for nearly the length of the work itself.
Horror 101 Episode 1: The Monster Squad (1987)
For our premiere episode Fred and Jam are discussing The Monster Squad from TriStar Pictures in 1987. Directed by Fred Dekker and co-written by Dekker and Shane Black, the elevator pitch is five pre-teens up against five of the Universal Monsters. While it never quite caught on and lives today in cult status, The Monster Squad is a great contemporary way to get acquainted with those classic creatures from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. New Podcast: Horror 101 – Episode 0
What is Horror 101? Why it’s the new horror movie podcast from Fred and Jam of Gaming History 101. This show will be a separate format, topic, and feed from the traditional show, but what better way to give a sneak peek than a brief introduction on the main feed? In this first episode Fred introduces you to the format, why the show is happening, what you can expect, and a brief history on the types of horror that existed each decade until the flood gates opened in the late 70s/early 80s.
