I don’t think you understand it, Sir Jam.
Half Life 3 was delayed for years (aka silently cancelled) NOT because of the fear of not meeting expectations. That did not stop George Lucas (15 years passed after Return of the Jedi), and he still made 2 move movies even after Phantom Menace failed to meet everyone’s expectations.
No, the real reason HL3 was quietly shelved was Gabe Newell getting too fat (pun intended) and happy. He saw Valve was making things that brought a LOT more money, and did not see the point in making a game not a lot of people (comparatively) will buy, instead of, say, another Team Fortress 2 expansion. And I did not even talk about all the money Steam was making! Face it: the reason HL3 was cancelled was because the man who owned the IP got too greedy to pay attention to niche games.
