Video Game Purists Ep 38: Rough NPCs
It’s time for all smiles at the trampoline park and the reality that the days of the theater are truly numbered as Fred waivers on the concept of going to the movies. Trees has been diving into Far Cry Primal and is enjoying himself thoroughly. Fred played some bite-sized experiences from Sega’s 60th Anniversary collection, cleared Tacoma on his day off, tested After Party and finally completed The Evil Within 2.

Video Game Purists Ep 36: Don’t Try New Things
This week Trees is off to the casino while Fred is off to the movies in two action packed stories. The conversation then shifts to games where Trees tested out Greedfall and A Night in the Woods while Fred enjoyed a co-op night of Resident Evil 5 and started The Evil Within 2. This all is wrapped in a tribute to the late, great, Eddie Van Halen.

Video Game Purists Ep 35: School of Pig Fish

This week Trees is going to HOA meetings while Fred is reading comics and watching bad horror movies like Midsommar. Gaming talks a bit about twitter before Trees expands on yet more time with No Man’s Sky, but also Sega Marine Fishing, and the newly released (and very popular) Genshin Impact. Fred is going mostly horror but manages to wrap Jak and Daxter before delving into the headache of the end of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, giving Condemned 2: Bloodshot a second chance after more than a decade, and big dumb fun with House of the Dead III.

Video Game Purists Ep 34: Sandworm!

This week it’s time to target Microsoft and the poor handling of pre-orders that happened earlier this week. Then Trees gets down to discussing No Man’s Sky, Prominence Poker, and a handful of Dreamcast titles. Fred is going all horror with the return of fall in The Sinking City and his first return to Resident Evil: Code Veronica X in over 10 years.

This week the PS5 has been announced and both pre-orders and Fred are a hot mess. After a long discussion about the now fully informed next generation and the exciting titles on the horizon, the discussion moves to games Trees and Fred have been playing. For Trees it’s wrapping up Man of Medan and starting Spiritfairer while Fred wrapped up Far Cry 4 and Shaq Fu (both the original and recent A Legend Reborn titles).
Video Game Purists Ep 32: Just the Cutscenes
It’s Trees celebrating his birthday week along with some chat about movies Mulan (2020) and The New Mutants. Fred can’t help himself and has to chat about the Xbox announcements and Mario’s 35th birthday releases from Nintendo. It all wraps up with Trees talking Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan and Fred grinding through more Far Cry 4 and the entire Battletoads franchise.

GH101 Lecture 3: What Games Cost To Make
This episode Fred flies solo with listener request to discuss the actual cost of making games. This means everything that goes into the budgeting for the publisher: development, marketing, and manufacturing. Real world examples are used to explain the history and actuality of what a game costs and why that price tag you see at the store has a very complicated reasoning behind it.
Opening Song: Never Forget – Halo 3
Closing Song: Aerith’s Theme – Final Fantasy VII
Video Game Purists Ep 31: This is 60
This week starts with some talk about movies including Bill & Ted Face the Music, Tenet, and The Emperor’s New Groove. Trees gave xCloud a go in addition to some PS VR and Hello Games’ new title The Last Campfire. Fred got addicted to the original Ratchet & Clank for a weekend before diving into the checklist-a-thon that is Far Cry 4.

Video Game Purists Ep 30: Where’s the Fast Forward Button?
This week Fred has a personal tragedy, but the silver lining is good times were had in movies and shows. Moving on to games, Trees is winding down No Man’s Sky but getting into Train Simulator as a way to have another reason to play mobile games. Fred is struggling with Metal Gear Solid 2, Yakuza 0, and Bio Evil (a Resident Evil isometric game developed for the Genesis), but finds plenty to enjoy with Dead Rising.

GH101 Lecture 2: NES Influence in NA

We return with a (hopefully) bi-weekly lecture series on a high level overview of video games. In this returning episode, Fred and Eli discuss how Nintendo rose to such unrivaled influence in North America. The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was synonymous with the term “video game” through the mid-late 1980s in a way no other console really has since. In this episode we discuss not only how this happened, by why one company was able to command most of a market for such a distinct period of time.
Songs (in order of appearance):
- Training Theme – Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! (NES)
- Act 4, Part 2 Level Theme – Ninja Gaiden (NES)
- Title Theme – Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES)
- Stage Theme – Karnov (NES)
- Main Theme – Metroid (FDS)
- Mission 4 Theme – Double Dragon II (NES)
