It’s the 20th Anniversary of the Sega Saturn.  Originally released in the late spring of 1995 the Saturn was unfortunately surrounded by bad circumstance all caused by Sega itself  The oddity is that from a Japanese standpoint, Sega’s biggest failure in all other regions was its biggest success.  Join Fred and Jam in discussing the early development, releases, and ultimate deaths of Sega’s most intricate home console.

Podcast: The Legacy of Konami

With recent events suggesting that Konami is on the way out, listeners may be surprised to know that Konami has amassed such an empire outside of the games space that there’s probably little concern internally. That said, Konami started life in video games and is responsible for many of the classics we all grew up with and this episode discusses many of them.

Podcast/Article: The Top 10 Nintendo 64 Games

with 3 comments

n64_top10

Due to a video issue and the ever growing challenge of collecting all of the games necessary for a top 10, we’ve decided to go audio only on the debate and reveal.  It’s not all bad news though, we do have the printed version if you don’t want to listen to the nearly 2 hour debate over our top 10.  Also be sure to submit your own top 10 via this comments section, sending an e-mail, or join the Patreon at $3 or more to be entered into a contest for $10 in Nintendo eShop credit.  We want strong community involvement for next week’s response.  The contest ends next Thursday, May 14, at midnight Eastern time.  The text top 10 is below.

playblackpool_post

Jam journeyed out to Castle Blackpool last weekend to spend a fun three days taking in retro gaming at Castle Blackpool.  This seems like something we all could definitely get into, but in lieu of attending the event, settle in for this thankful look back with Jam himself at his weekend with Play Blackpool.

aliens

This week Fred and Jam chat about the wonderful world of Alien licensed games. As one of the few franchises that began at the same time as video games themselves, a mere three years after the initial film’s release there were Alien games. The trend continued across the entire film series run with varied success as each game attempts to be unique, expand the universe, and still be faithful to the original work.

rka_post

Rocket Knight Adventures came out during the apex of Genesis/Mega Drive game design. Developed by Konami with roots in the Contra franchise, this cute possum with armor and a jet pack was a charming action platformer. Unfortunately given main character Sparkster’s mascot status and the trends on consoles at the time, this is probably one of the best games you’ve never played. Join Fred and Jam on a journey through a true Sega classic.

This month we have been tasked with covering three games and Jam was the first into the gate with his Playstation 1 reflection of Bust-A-Move 2.  The follow-up to the original game, better known as Puzzle Bobble in arcades, this was one of the many instances where home console ports began to catch up with and properly port over the arcade experience.  Jam and his special guest delve into their reflections on this classic cooperative puzzle game.

Podcast: Nintendo’s Double Ds

with 2 comments

64dd_post

This week Fred and Jam talk about Nintendo’s random and rare add-on for the Nintendo 64 that only released in Japan, the 64 DD. A compression disk drive that allowed various forms of software and accessories that were quite forward thinking when announced in 1995 but ultimately was anitquated when it finally premiered in 1999. With some of the most versatile and interesting software of the late 90s, the 64 DD is not simply an add-on to display on a shelf (although that’s what most do with it).

This week, after talking about the controversial Genesis/Mega Drive Top 10 and getting the community list, Fred and Jam run and jump into the world of Donkey Kong.
