Celebrate Halloween with Splatterhouse 2 and Typing of the Dead

leave a comment »

Happy Halloween from Gaming History 101!  To celebrate we had Fred tackle Splatterhouse 2, a game he tragically had not played until today.  Can he overcome the house of horrors and save Jennifer?
Warning: Both videos contain adult language and gameplay violence.

Then to lighten things up Fred moves over to the Dreamcast to play through Typing of the Dead.

Retro Game Night: Mega Man Legacy Collection

leave a comment »

The Mega Man Legacy Collection just released with the first six NES games blown up in beautiful 1080p and plenty of goodies.  Fred checks out the emulation, some of the features, and proves he’s still quite terrible at Mega Man.

Retro Game Night: Neo-Retro Marathon!

There was a lot of gameplay involved in my short visit to Neo-Retro town, but it was worth it.  Check out the videos below:

This was supposedly a collection of forgotten Dreamcast mini-games, it turns out to be a weird collection of Sonic love fests.  Its, um, well, you’ll see…

Retro Game Night: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (NES)

leave a comment »

This week Retro Game Night features Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom for the NES.  One of the many games that had a non-traditional arcade-to-console port, this licensed product was significant because it was an unlicensed Tengen game and then eventually became an officially licensed Mindscape game, so there are two identical versions in the wild.  Fred goofs around with it a bit to give the general gist.

Retro Game Night: Rumble Roses

leave a comment »

As part of the three game obligation from over a month ago, Fred had to cover Rumble Roses, an all female wrestling game on the Playstation 2.  Just from the box art you can tell that this game is most likely suggestive with skimpy outfits, busty women, and provocative poses.  Well now we play the game, see what it has to offer, and even decide if it’s kusoge or not (explained in the video).  While there is no true nudity or sexual content, you may want to consider what follows to be NSFW (not safe for work), but it is worth checking out if only to see this wacky Konami title from a time where companies took more risks.

Retro Game Night: Fahrenheit Indigo Prophecy Remastered

leave a comment »

This week we take a look (in glorious 1080p) at the remastered edition of Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy).  After recently booting this up for our review, I’m not quite sure who this particular port is for.  It looks just like Fahrenheit, plays just like it too, and I could be wrong but I think the original could be pushed to 1080p on PC (where this version is currently exclusive to) so I think they just did some re-rendering of textures, glossed it up, and slapped it online.  Perhaps that was all we should expect, I don’t know.  Anyway, check it out for yourself in the video below.

Retro Game Night: Crypt Killer and Mad Dog McCree

leave a comment »

This week for Retro Game Night we go all light gun shooters (yes, they can be captured and streamed).

First up is arcade 3D shooter Crypt Killer, which was horror themed and moved from arcades to Saturn and the PS1 (Saturn version shown).  Sorry about the sound on the game being much louder than my voice, it was live and no one told me.

Next up is the 1990 “classic” Mad Dog McCree, one of the first laserdisc arcade games that was almost perfectly ported to the Nintendo Wii.  Here it is in all its glory (and in 720p!)

If you want to check out Retro Game Night, we do it every Friday night at 11:30 pm est on our Twitch channel (twitch.tv/gh101).  You can also follow us for random live broadcasts and check that page for our ongoing replay of Resident Evil HD Remaster on the PS3, which comes to the US on January 20.

Retro Game Night: Die Hard Trilogy and Arcade

leave a comment »

This week for Retro Game Night it’s a double header from the greatest Christmas movie of all time: Die Hard.  When the PS1 and Saturn launched Fox Interactive released a series of trilogy video games from its properties, one of which was Die Hard Trilogy, combining a 3rd person isometric shooter for the original film, an on-rails Virtua Cop style light gun shooter (controllers work too) for the second film, and somewhat of a Crazy Taxi clone for the third film.  We play it here (in HD) to give you a taste of all three.

Then, around the same time Sega decided to release its arcade brawler Die Hard Arcade (which started life as Streets of Rage 4) exclusively on the Saturn.  With no other ports (thanks to Sega’s publishing and distribution rights) and a so-so version on MAME, this is truly the only plug-and-play home port of the game.  Check it out.

Primal Rage Retrospective and Comparison Video

leave a comment »

Primal Rage was one of the more notable Mortal Kombat clones in arcades in 1994.  The popularity of this Atari Games fighter secured multiple ports to the home consoles of the time, a true cross-gen title that was on most portable, 16-bit, and 32-bit CD consoles.  GH101 looks into the history, gameplay, and home console versions of this dinosaur brawler.

Resident Evil HD Remaster First Look

leave a comment »

Sorry this is going up on Sunday night.  Normally Retro Game Night is recorded on Friday and goes up Saturday morning, but we had to delay recording a day and these HD videos take a lot longer to render and post to YouTube.  Either way, the video speaks for itself, but Fred got a retail copy of Resident Evil HD Remaster on PS3 that will be coming to the US in “early” 2015 (according to Capcom).  Well since there was another option, we grabbed it early.  Enjoy!
