Podcast: Silent Hill Zero

Whenever a franchise runs long enough, it’s inevitable that you will eventually see a prequel to the original. It just so happens that the fifth game in both the Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchises happened to be prequels. This week Jam and Fred welcome back guest host Vos to delve into the development, release, and reception of both Resident Evil Zero and Silent Hill Origins (known as Silent Hill Zero in Japan).
The Countdown Horror Obscura – Day 6: Resident Evil Gaiden
Day 6: Resident Evil Gaiden
Resident Evil Gaiden is very much the misunderstood step child of the Resident Evil series. Capcom likes to put it in the corner along with its other B-list Resident Evil titles like Operation Raccoon City and Mercenaries 3D and pretend they just don’t really exist. Unfortunately like a lot of Capcoms other industry mistakes some of us can’t forget the past. I for one feel Resident Evil Gaiden is a portable title that though flawed, brings a unique take on the series formula with incredibly restricted hardware.

So stop me if you haven’t heard this one from the Resident Evil series: you play as a anti-Umbrella agent who intercepts a passenger ship on the sea and soon finds it has been overrun by monsters. Well before the series copied its own idea literally twice in Dead Aim and Revelations, Gaiden was the game that some would consider the genesis of Resident Evil’s small obsession with campaigns on a boat. The agent you play is the greatest character from the series Barry Burton. Except now you finally get to play as this beard faced hunk of manliness. I am aware he’s also recently and finally been allowed to have his own campaign in Revelations 2 but Resident Evil Gaiden was for the longest time the only way for Burton fans to get their fix of the man with the best one liners in the series history. Anyway, back to the game. Barry is basically on the ship to find Leon Kennedy but along the way he comes across a young girl who seems to be the only survivor of this horror as well as a B.O.W who has the ability to morph into human form. One of the main reasons I think Gaiden is absolutely fantastic and I wish this was an actual cannon to the Resident Evil story is because of how it ends. If you really don’t want a pinnacle part of the plot to be spoiled for you then I advise you to skip the following paragraph because I’m about to explain the ending.
Retro Game Night: Mega Man Legacy Collection
The Mega Man Legacy Collection just released with the first six NES games blown up in beautiful 1080p and plenty of goodies. Fred checks out the emulation, some of the features, and proves he’s still quite terrible at Mega Man.
Lost Treasures of Gaming: Dragon’s Lair (Gameboy Color)
This week’s Lost Treasures of Gaming featured Mike Mika (some know him as “Donkey Kong Dad”) discussing one of his larger feats: porting the arcade version of Dragon’s Lair to the Gameboy Color along with his team. The feat is difficult and the result is impressive, especially when you see a 500 MB+ title reduced to 4 MB. We check it out, compare the arcade version, and die a lot.

Capcom Announces Resident Evil 2 Remake
So I get this e-mail about an hour ago from Capcom that says to check out the video above. I tried to hide my excitement as I read the name of the video: Resident Evil 2 Remake – Special Message From Producer “H”. Yep, it’s official, Capcom is remaking the beloved sequel, Resident Evil 2 and fresh on the heels of the nearly complete fan remake. What a predicament. On one hand I really like the RE4 style that the fan remake offers and here’s hoping a C&D (Cease & Desist Order) doesn’t show up in that team’s inbox until at least a few days after the release allowing myself and many other fans to grab it for legacy. On the other hand, I really would like to see what the team at Capcom can do with this project since we (myself and Jam) still love the Resident Evil franchise, adored the HD Remaster (and by proxy the original REmake), and the fact that I was rather disappointed in the efforts of both the main franchise and the Revelations series to date. They were okay, but not what I desired in the original four games’ veins. This also hopefully means it’ll be only a matter of time before we get the Remake treatment to Resident Evil 3 and then I think it’s safe to say I’m all out of things I want from this franchise. The video clearly states that development was just greenlit, which means this game will probably release alongside Bloodstained and Shenmue III in 2017 or later, but what the hell, we can wait.
Special thanks to Michael (@deadpoolprime) for the heads up. My press contacts already gave me access to the video, but I hadn’t looked at it yet and he reminded me that when I get a message to watch a special video, I should probably take the sliver of time to give it an immediate gander.
Street Fighter (Fighting Street) Review

One of the most common questions I have been asked in regards to fighting games is, “why is Street Fighter II a sequel? Where is Street Fighter?” An understandable question, especially when you consider that the original Street Fighter was released in arcades a whopping four years later, plays completely different from its sequel, and was called Fighting Street in its only US console release (on the Turbografx-CD no less). If you’re a fan of Street Fighter II, the concept of getting to see where the series starts is tempting to say the least (and now completely possible without expensive hardware thanks to the virtual console and Capcom Collection), but you’ll soon find that Street Fighter is much more of a proof of concept rather than a fighting game that pre-dates the record setting sequel.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City with Fred and Jam
Fred has never played Operation Raccoon City and after it was mentioned on the most recent Silent Evil Episode, he finally decided to join veteran to the game and co-host Jam for a co-op session. This is the result.

It May Happen: Resident Evil 2 Fan Remake Nears Finish
I remember hearing constantly about Resident Evil 2 fan remakes in the last couple of years. Time has been kind to other members of the series, including the HD Remaster of the Gamecube remake and the “elite” 1080p version of Resident Evil 4. Now it appears, thanks to a recent Eurogamer update, that the fan created (and free) Unreal Engine 4 remake of Resident Evil 2 is only a couple of months away. This version takes the over-the-shoulder style of Resident Evil 4 and brings back the classic sequel we all anticipated for two years on the original Playstation. No word yet on what Capcom has to say about it – clearly it has remained silent on the topic – but if you really want this game you will want to grab it the second we post the download link.
Fred’s Take: I fear this is going to be one of many titles that’s probably best left in the creative memory of what it used to be. That said, I will gladly pick up this free version of the game (and possibly even donate some money provided it’s the stellar effort in this video) and see how I feel. Who knows, perhaps it will be the breath of fresh air I’ve been waiting for from Resident Evil.
Podcast: Silent Evil Gaiden
Special guest Vos joins. Resident Evil and Silent Hill are known for the canonical tales in the numbered storylines, but amidst the biological warfare and haunted towns lies a lesser appreciated series of tales. Enter the “gaiden” or side story. These are the titles on the lesser known consoles, portables, and even mobile phones that surprisingly create unique gameplay and plotlines that, while not as appreciated, are welcome additions to the library.
Holy Crap! The Misadventures of Tron Bonne is on the US PSN Store!

I was jumping around my RSS reader and somehow missed yesterday’s announcement on Capcom-Unity that The Misadventures of Tron Bonne has released on the US PSN store for only $6. Why is this such a big deal, you ask? Well if you’re not familiar with the title – and there’s a good chance you are not – The Misadventures of Tron Bonne is somewhat of a mini-campaign (not mini-game, mini-campaign) collection starring the female pirate from Mega Man Legends. Released on the original Playstation, the game had a very limited print run and sells for $100 on eBay for a disc only copy and nearly twice that if you have a case and instructions. This game had you setting out on multiple adventures, but each adventure was a different game type such as RPG, platformer, puzzle game, etc., and I’ve heard it’s great. Now we all will get a chance to play this fantastic side project spawned from Mega Man Legends without having to worry about getting ripped off, getting a scratched disc, or even digging out a home console as this is both PSP and Vita compatible. If you’ve missed the subtle hints, get this game NOW.
