Podcast: Nier Game Club
In the first game club for the new format Fred, Jam, and guest Fortengard jump into the ambitious world of Nier. Developed by dissolved developer Cavia and published by Square Enix, this is one of the oddest titles to appear last generation. In this episode the hosts dissect the development, campaign, gameplay, and audio/visuals of this divisive cult favorite.
Opening: Snow in Summer
Fishing: Song of the Ancients Fate
Town: Song of the Ancients (Devola)
Open Area: Hills of Radiant Winds
Dungeon: The Wrecked Automatons
Closing: Yona (Piano Version)
Podcast: The Tales of Lord British
As Fortengard best puts it in the episode, Richard Garriott is one of the first (if not the first) writers as video game creators. It’s for that reason that the Ultima series stands out, not to mention the drastic direction change of the middle three “avatar” games. Jam can’t make it so Fred joins guest Fortengard to discuss the legacy of “Lord British” and the unique franchise he created.
***PLEASE NOTE: We are aware of the echo effect added to Fred in this episode. It has been fixed and should not appear next episode. Sorry.***
Twas the Night Before Xmas, Part 4
For the first time ever, Jamalais joins in a Christmas episode with Fred and special guest Fortengard to discuss Christmas stories, memories, and the holiday releases of 1998 and 1999. This amazing art comes courtesy of listener SieOne.
Podcast: Big Boss Man Part 2
Listener @Fortengard joins us to continue our earlier discussion on the art of the boss battle. With tons of community news, e-mails (thanks guys), and news articles, we don’t get there until about halfway through but then we get down to the concept of the doppelganger, the “dark” version, and attacking oneself. We then tackle roundtable discussion about our significant boss battles.
Podcast: What Did You Expect?
This week Fred and Jam are joined by guest Fortengard to talk about the world of video game movies. Now, if we just sat around and ragged on them all day we would be just like every other gaming podcast. Instead, we delve into concepts of production, adaptation, and what makes these movies good or what makes them completely worthless.
Note: I promised to post the chat for this show as well, you can find it here (.doc version).
Podcast: Final Fantasy in 3D
This week we are joined by listener Fortengard and Andy from 42 Level One to discuss the original Playstation Final Fantasy games (FF VII – FF IX). Controversy erupts over the endless love and condemnation for VII, the brutal Junction System of VIII, and the all-too-familiar nature of IX. All beloved, the final opinion is that they should all be experienced.
Podcast: Big Boss Man
This week Fred is joined by guests @JamesFortengard and @Xenocore to discuss the origins and some of our favorite boss battles. A dying art, we celebrate those large scale gatekeepers and rule-breaking big baddies that challenged our past and is barely kept alive today.
Podcast: Generation in Review
This week Fred welcomes listener Yuri (@JamesFortengard) and fellow podcaster Isaiah (@i_say_uh) from the Party Chat to discuss the console generation that officially comes to an end on 11/15/2013. They discuss innovations, trends, and passing fads of the longest generation ever in history that awarded gamers with some of the most dynamic experiences to date.
