Clock Tower: The First Fear Game Club

clock_tower_post

The Clock Tower series has always been a unique horror title since it’s western inception on the original Playstation.  There are no weapons, no fighting, and the main mechanic is hiding from a small man swinging around massive shears that will only result in death if your character is found.  What many may not know is that the series actually began in Japan only on the SNES (and even had a remake of sorts on the Playstation, again in Japan only).  Thanks fan translations, Jam and Fred sit down to discuss this initial outing that we in the West never got and is probably the strongest entry in the franchise.

Podcast: Parasite Eve Game Club

It’s not quite a survival horror, but not quite an RPG.  It’s not quite developed in Japan but hardly a sole USA product either.  Needless to say whether you’ve played it or not, there aren’t really other games with the development history or style of Parasite Eve.  Beloved by those who played it back in the late 90s, this Squaresoft RPG with action elements that hit during the PS1 JRPG boon has its place among Square’s robust catalog.

mm_logo_post

This week Fred and Jam wrap up Majora’s Mask with the final two dungeons, the ending, and probably the biggest draw to the game, the side quests. It’s a lengthy discussion that goes down to the wire but definitely demonstrates a game that while not appreciated in its time but can have a second life now.  Part 1 can be found here.

The recent re-release of one of the Legend of Zelda series more unique entries, Majora’s Mask, sparked our interest enough to do a game club on a title none of us had honestly played. We got more than we bargained for with a unique and enchanting title that we were only able to discuss the first half of in this week’s show. Part 1 deals with the development, release, and intro to the game through the second dungeon, with the end and side quests coming next week.

Rocket Knight Adventures came out during the apex of Genesis/Mega Drive game design. Developed by Konami with roots in the Contra franchise, this cute possum with armor and a jet pack was a charming action platformer. Unfortunately given main character Sparkster’s mascot status and the trends on consoles at the time, this is probably one of the best games you’ve never played. Join Fred and Jam on a journey through a true Sega classic.

Podcast: Alien Trilogy and Die Hard Trilogy Game Club

The better title for this episode was probably “Because 90’s”, but either way Fred and Jam tackle six massive movies made into two interesting games by one single studio.  Both released in 1996, Probe Software’s Alien Trilogy was a re-writing of three movies in one single genre (Doom clone) whereas Die Hard Trilogy was a compilation of three different genres (3rd person shooter, light gun shooter, and driving game) based on each game.  The results are interesting and stems some interesting conversation on these powerhouse trilogies.

Podcast: Snatcher and Policenauts Game Club

Hideo Kojima, best known for the quirky stealth series Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid has also delved into the world of visual novels and point-and-click adventure games.  If you aren’t aware of them, it’s probably because Snatcher released on the Sega CD only and didn’t clear 10,000 units sold in the US and Policenauts has never released outside of Japan.  Thanks to Fred’s lucky ownership of a super rare game and emulation/fan translations for all other instances, the GH101 crew delves deeply into a nearly 3 hour podcast on Kojima’s futuristic adventures with some of the worst shooting sequences in all of gaming.
