Oh yeah and it's Fred's birthday and listener SieOne was kind enough to send a card.

Oh yeah and it’s Fred’s birthday and listener SieOne was kind enough to send a card.

This week we ring in the new year with guest Gary Butterfield from duckfeed.tv and the Watch Out For Fireballs podcast to discuss video games based on tabletop games.  Of course the big one, Dungeons & Dragons, takes up a chunk of the conversation but there are others that make their way in.  We also track the history and progression of taking earlier stat-based games and being able to integrate them properly onto the screen.

Podcast: Secret of Mana Game Club

This week Fred and Jam re-live the adventures of Hero, Girl, and Sprite as they uncover the mana sword and take on a dark empire.  Originally developed as the first SNES Playstation CD game, business decisions obviously forced this back onto a cartridge with impressive results.  Oh yeah, and we never played it in full until now.

Podcast: Twas the Night Before Xmas Pt. 3 (1994-1997)

8-bit-gaming-christmas-wreath

This week was supposed to feature tons of guests like Trees from EZMU, Yogi from Horseplay, and Shawn from Knuckleballer and Zombiecast, but of course Fred screwed up and lost the recording from the live show.  As a result Jam and Fred got back together to re-record and I must say we’re quite pleased with the outcome.  Doesn’t make up for the lack of guests, but we did manage to get in most of their comments along the way.

lightgun_post

This week Fred and Jam tackle the wonderful world of light gun shooters.  What started as a mere carnival game evolved into one of the more interactive – and for some of us fun – genres that has not withstood the test of time.  With the advent of newer screens, the technology that made light guns possible is now ruined by delays of no more than a fraction of a second.  In this episode we discuss the history, technology behind, and our fondest memories of the games that utilized the light gun peripheral.

90_fight_post

This week Fred and Jam are throwing around fighters of the 90s (that aren’t Street Fighter II or Tekken, we did a show for those already).  In the 1990s, the fighter genre was the most popular type of game available (like First Person Shooters today), and among those that have withstood the test of time there were plenty of others that played the field.  From Mortal Kombat to Soulcalibur you had plenty of arcades (and home ports) to drink your quarters in arcades.

SONY DSC

This week Fred and Jam are joined by Andy from 42 Level One to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Sony Playstation.  This CD based console is responsible for so much ushering into the next iteration of game development, hardware, media, and game libraries.  It touched each host in his own way and deserves to be celebrated on its second decade of existence.

Video game soundtracks are as varied and nostalgic as the games themselves.  Sometimes just hearing a few bars from a classic tune brings the memories of playing that game rushing back.  Thanks to the community and a handful of personal selections, Fred and Jam present a collection of nostalgic favorites.

vape_post

This week Fred and Jam chit chat about vaporware (ie: games stuck in development hell) that actually came out.  The most obvious example is Duke Nukem Forever, but as the guys prove there are no lack of “is it coming out?” games, some of which are still in the void today.

This week Fred and Jam are discussing the misadventures of Master Chief, at least in terms of the Bungie developed ones.  What started out as a Real Time Strategy (RTS) title for the Mac ended up ironically being the launch title for the Microsoft Xbox that has withstood the test of time and is to this day one of the strongest properties in gaming.
